The thesis addresses the trends which have recently emerged in the field of Islamic law, with particular reference to the contributions of an Iraqi jurist of great political and legal importance, Muhammad Baqer As-Sadr, who was executed in April 1980.

The first part analyses constitutional law. Chapter one presents the constitutional field as a legacy of the Shi’i eighteenth century Akhbari‑Usuli controversy and of the structure and curriculum of the Shi'i colleges of law. Chapter two examines Sadr's writings of 1979 and compares them with the 1979 constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran. chapter three looks into related developments in Iran from the Revolution to the present.

The second part deals with economics and banking in relation to Islamic law. Chapter four presents Sadr's system as it appears in his most important work on Islamic economics, which was published in 1961. This work is then contrasted with post‑revolutionary Iranian developments, especially in land reform. Chapter five analyses the development of the theory of riba (interest, usury) and the related jurisprudential debate in Egypt as the background to Muhammad Baqer As‑Sadr's studies of the structure and operations of an interest‑free bank (chapter six).

The conclusion highlights the characteristics of the Islamic legal Renaissance.
